"Sacred Malu" is part of the Tatau series of paintings from 2021. In Samoan culture, the human body is considered a sacred and beautiful creation of Tagaloa, the creator of the world. As westerners came to Samoa, they brought shame and disgust to what was once considered sacred and worthy of display.
The tatau (tattoo) shown here is placed upon the women as a form of protection.
