Lemanā lived in Samoa many years ago. Her tears were associated with rain. Tears of joy brought soft misty rain to the mountains, her sadness brought downpours of heavy rain, and her anger brought sudden storms which flooded the land.
During her lifetime, a great drought fell across the Pacific Islands, attributed to a time in her life when she was treated cruelly by the man she loved.
Through the taulasea (traditional Samoan healers), she learned more about her gift, and was able to heal her connection. As her gift was restored, and she was reminded of who she was, she found peace far away from the cruelty she faced.
At the moment she felt true peace, her tears began to fall, and created showers of rain that came gently during the night, nourishing the ground, refreshing the crops, washing away her tears, and lulling the people to a restful sleep.
This painting shows the timuga (rain showers) that Lemanā's tears of peace brought to cure the drought many years ago.
Interestingly, archaeologists have found evidence of a drought over 1,000 years ago in the Pacific which caused a large number of Pacific Islanders to travel to other islands looking for relief.
